From Dima: Eva, you signed up for a summer internship project that will take a lot of your time and effort. This will not be easy. Please set your expectations that there will be a lot of work to do. Your parents will probably be checking this page and keep bothering you on “why you didn’t update this page for 2-3-4-5… days now?” Remember, all you will get from this is a piece of paper that will state that you passed (or failed) summer internship at biotechnology company in Austin, TX.
Please use this page as your science notebook for your summer internship – all your answers, observations, questions, and results – all should be added here on this page (you can add text and post pictures here; using this page will also teach you how to use the WordPress platform). I will be adding comments here as well. Please feel free to call me anytime at 512-350-0302 (if I don’t answer the phone just type your comments here and I will respond back on this page).
Please start with internet research regarding the instrument you received by answering the following questions (copy/paste will not work, you will need to perform the internet research using google.com and then write your own answers to the following questions):
Model and name of the instrument: Siemens Rapidpoint 405
What is it used for? It is used to test blood for diseases and other viruses.
Who needs it? The people that need it, are people who need fast on sight testing.
What parts is it made of? The 405 system components consist of the following functional groups: base model measurement module, a CO-ox model measurement module, fluidic components, and electronic components. It has a CO-ox Pump, Sample Chamber, Hemolyzer, and CO-ox module.
How does it work? Describe in great detail. The machine will find the percentages or amounts of electrolytes, potassium, etc.in blood. You must pick what type of blood it is before, the three options are arterial, capillary, and venous. It then it scans a sample of blood . After 60 seconds it will show you the results and any abnormalities will be shown or highlighted in red.
Were you able to find an instrument manual online? Yes, I was able to find the manual.
Read the manual. Describe what was clear in the manual and what was confusing. The clear part of the manual was the part about the sample analysis. It was very straight forward, and helped me a lot. The area about the sequence diagrams was very confusing to me. It had a lot of words that I didn’t understand, and I didn’t necessarily saw the point of it in the manual.
Early June 2020, the project was changed to the BIOSITE TRIAGE METER PRO project, as described – please follow the guide below:
From Dima: Please start with internet research regarding the instrument you received by answering the following questions (copy/paste will not work, you will need to perform the internet research using google.com and then write your own answers to the following questions):
Model and name of the instrument: biosite triage meter pro.
What is it used for? its used for people who need bedside fast blood testing .
Who needs it? The people who need it are people who need fast bedside testing .
What parts is it made of? Triage MeterPro include an alphanumeric keypad, 75 percent larger display, backlighting and faster printing. The Triage Meters also feature “Test Select” which gives healthcare providers the flexibility to customize test menus based on physician preference or patient presentation when using Triage Test Panels with multiple analytes.
How does it work? The Triage MeterPro is a portable, rapid testing platform designed to provide rapid, quantitative or qualitative results for immunoassays using urine, whole-blood or plasma and features comprehensive built-in quality control capabilities.
Were you able to find an instrument manual online? yes
Read the manual. Describe what was clear in the manual and what was confusing. I turned on the instrument and it worked. The only thing i need to run test completely is blood. If you could please tell me how to access it or if i even need it that would be greatly appreciated.
Running tests
I turned on the machine to run some tests. The first test I ran was QC device test. It worked and everything passed a expected. Everything got a little tricky after that. The machine came with a supervisor code chip and a QC and a QC device code chip module. The first thing I did was update the user ID so I could run tests easier and faster. Then I tried running a patient sample from my fathers blood. I ran into multiple problems. The first problem was that I didn’t have any patient history, to get that history was to run the test so I kept trying. Then I looked closer and saw that in the manual I was missing a coded chip that’s needed to run tests. I don’t know how to acquire this code chip so I am turning to you. Bellow I have uploaded links for the pictures from this day.

After you have completed internet research, try to turn on the instrument and see what happens. Make a picture and post it here. You may be missing power cord and/or adapter cables (find out what cords/cables/adapters are missing, find missing part on Amazon or eBay, and post Amazon/eBay link here, so I can get you the missing part). Some instruments been in storage and are very dusty – clean them with Windex spray and paper towels (your parents got a cleaning supplies cabinet somewhere in your house, find it).
Try to operate the instrument using the manual … is it working? Do you need certain supplies to make it work? Find the catalog numbers (from the manual) of the required supplies, where from they are available and post here links of what we need to order. Post here results of your testing, and how do you plan to move forward.
This is your notebook now … write and post answers and pictures below:
Over the last few weeks I’ve been working on reading the triage meter manual. I haven’t finished it yet but i would like to tell you about the progress I made. This machine is more or less like the rapid point , but a lot more portable. It would be more useful for emergency and bedside testing to get quicker results. This machine would also be more useful in natural disasters and emergencies. This machine only needs batteries to operate , so if someone needs testing in a power outage this would be better. I’m excited to keep working and researching this project. This is my progress report and I’ll be continuing researching.
6/30/2020 From Dima: Please provide an update with your progress using new instrument – please post pictures, research, and results here. To get an idea of my expectations – please check Maria’s progress on a different project, this will give you good idea of expected independent work that should be done: http://ovcharenko-nsk.com/2020-maria-matevosyan-summer-internship-project/
7/26/2020: From Dima: Internship deadline is August 17, 2020. You have 3 weeks left, please note that it will not be possible to add text/data after this date due to the nature of summer internship and associated time limits.
8/15/2020: Internship was not completed by 8/15/2020.
